Today, after at least a month of looking for any signs of monarch butterfly caterpillars with no luck, I spotted one while not even looking. I've seen an adult monarch at the flowers and flitting around the butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) for weeks now. So, I had high hopes for eggs or larvae.
I did a cursory look for more, but didn't see any...but that doesn't mean they aren't there.

Hey, that's great! I still haven't seen any Monarch cats this year, and I've only seen 3 adult butterflies, always just flying over, not stopping to feed. Other folks have also said their numbers are down.
Thanks, Julie.
I'd say you still have a chance of getting them. I *just* went back to check earlier blog entries regarding the monarch caterpillars and realize that they have shown up in August each of the three years I have documented. This is one of the benefits of doing this blog. :)
So far, I only see the one larva, so maybe my numbers are down too...or maybe I'm just not out there enough seeing them.
