I saw my first hummingbird of the season today. :)
No picture, but it was a beautiful moment. Took me a second to realize what I was looking at, but then he came right into focus with his ruby throat, he stopped in mid-air for a moment, then flew off toward the second acre.
He must've been pretty close, because he looked much bigger than I remember them being.

We haven't seen any yet, but the lonicera sempervirens is blooming, so if there are any in the area, they should visit soon.
Our wild columbine was just about to bloom last week when the rain started. I don't think I have been in the yard for a week (feels like two), and I feel like I missed so much. The columbine is now in full bloom.
I'm guessing the hummer(s) have been here for a while, I just didn't have a chance to see it until today. Hopefully you will find that you are in the right place at the right time soon... and see one of your own.
Congrats on your first hummer sighting, I've seen only 4 and we're a little bit ahead of you down here in VA. Inexplicably, they just fly through only stopping for a second to look at our hummer feeder or plants, and keep going. I've yet to see one drink any nectar. My only guess is they'd rather dine at the honeysuckle buffet along the roadside.
Thanks, Julie. :)
I have several wild columbine and a couple Silene out front as well as a quite a few wild geranium (which I swear I saw them go to years ago), so I am wondering if he came from the front yard around the side of the house to the back where I was standing. He was just hovering there--I wonder if we kind of just ran into each other unexpectedly, checked each other out for a moment, then he went on his way. So, I really don't know if he was eating from the smorgasbord out front or not.
I'd love to get some pictures or a video of a hummer coming to my wildflowers.
Hopefully, we'll both see a lot more before the season is over. :) Thanks for sharing.
