Recreating a native habitat has been a dream of mine since I was about 18. It only took me 20 years, but I finally have two acres of land in the country with which to work (and play). My goal is to document the improvements I make to the property: restoring habitat & attracting birds and butterflies in addition to other wildlife.
Just the back yard!? Nah, I want the front and side yards landscaped in natives too.

There are ways to keep the killer sparrows from the nesting boxes. Fish line wrapped around nails draping over the roof down beside the holes and dangling with weights keeps them away and doesn't bother the blue birds in the least.
Thanks for the advice, Anonymous. I've not see the house sparrows since, but I will definitely keep your suggestion in mind.
(I almost lost your comment due to blogger issue--when I tried to publish it, message came up saying it no longer existed...luckily it was e-mailed to me, so I was able to post it anyway.
Sorry for the delay.)
