Recreating a native habitat has been a dream of mine since I was about 18. It only took me 20 years, but I finally have two acres of land in the country with which to work (and play). My goal is to document the improvements I make to the property: restoring habitat & attracting birds and butterflies in addition to other wildlife.
Just the back yard!? Nah, I want the front and side yards landscaped in natives too.

Acorns to Oaks
Today I picked up some acorns that were starting to sprout. I planted them around the woodland and hedgerow.
I remember thinking no matter how small my yard, I'd plant natives. Even if it were an enclosed courtyard. Of course, one has to scale down what is planted in a small space. I'm sure your half acre is a magnet for wildlife where few refuges exist.
I'm truly thrilled to have our two acres...and *I wish* we had a bigger piece of land too!
I also wish I could've started when I was younger...I hope I get to see these oaks reach maturity even if I can't see them become majestic old trees.

David, you make me wish I had a bigger piece of land instead of our in-town half-acre.
