Just the back yard!? Nah, I want the front and side yards landscaped in natives too.

Red-wing & Robins

I've been keeping my eye out for the first red-wing blackbird of the year. Finally, on my drive in to work Friday morning, I spotted a male among the trees and shrubs along the highway where there is a field with a pond. Each year, I will try to document the first I see...it seems they are early this year--not really a surprise with how mild it has been.

This morning I saw a few robins in the yard. While trying to focus the camera, I missed a great shot of a robin pulling a worm from the ground.

We saw both robins and r.w. blackbirds just today. Great sign of spring.

Heather,

Glad that I'm not alone in seeing them. I'm always happy to see the red-wings return.

My ninth grade Biology teacher always said that the red-wing blackbird was a true sign of spring. The males come about two weeks ahead of the females, so, according to him, in two weeks it will be spring. With the mild winter we've had, I feel it is already here.

He also said that robins sometimes stay year round. I guess once my plantings mature and I add others, there may be enough berries to sustain them.

Thank you for the comment. I can tell from your profile that you are a kindred spirit. :)

It just occurred to me that I have several red-winged blackbirds in my title picture. I must be getting old. I was thrilled to get that shot...and I hope to see as many hanging around here as I did that day last year.
